Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of parenting practice in the longitudinal relation between marital relationship satisfaction and elementary school children¡¯s happiness and problem behaviors.
Methods: This study used data from the Panel Study on Korean Children, using wave 10 for parents¡¯ marital relationship satisfaction, wave 11 for parenting practice, and wave 12 for child happiness and problem behaviors. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, correlations, and mediation analysis using Hayes¡¯ process macro model 4.
Results: For the child happiness model, parental permissive parenting mediated the relation between marital relationship satisfaction and child happiness. For the child problem behaviors model, paternal authoritarian parenting fully mediated the relation between marital relationship satisfaction and child problem behaviors. Maternal authoritarian and permissive parenting partially mediated the relation between marital relationship satisfaction and child problem behaviors.
Conclusions: This study discusses the importance of parents¡¯ marital relationship satisfaction and parenting practice on child happiness and problem behaviors. It also discusses ways to apply the results to the family therapy and education field.
